Rugby unites Rigo communities in friendly Gomore–Hula match
Rugby excitement brought communities together in Gomore Village yesterday, as local teams hosted a friendly return match against Hula Village.
The games featured A, B, and C grade teams and were part of preparations for the 2026 Somare Cup Rugby Nines. Organisers said the event aimed to keep young people and school teams active, while fostering community pride and unity.
Senior Rigo Rugby League referee Vaita Buri officiated the matches, ensuring a fair and competitive contest.
The event also marked the launch of the Walk the Talk Association’s Awareness Program, which promotes community development through agriculture and sports in the Rigo District.
The Walk the Talk Association Incorporated is a community-based rice-growing organisation that empowers local farmers through training in sustainable agriculture. In partnership with the National Agricultural Research Institute [NARI] and the Taiwan Technical Mission, the association works to boost food security and rural self-reliance.
Association director Vera Raga expressed his support for the rugby initiative, showcasing the importance of engaging youth in positive activities.
“Our aim is to support young people and encourage them to stay active while building strong community ties,” Raga said. “Sport is a powerful tool for bringing people together, and we are proud to provide uniforms and ongoing support for these teams.”
He added: “Through initiatives like this, we also promote the values of discipline, teamwork, and community spirit, qualities that are just as important on the field as they are in everyday life.”
As the major sponsor, Walk the Talk Association provided uniforms for the A Grade teams and pledged ongoing support for the B and C Grade teams, reinforcing its commitment to both sport and community development.
The friendly match not only showcased local rugby talent but also strengthened ties between neighbouring villages, demonstrating the power of sport to unite communities in Central Province.
