13 dead after bus plunges into ravine near Goroka

A tragic road accident near Korefegu, just outside Goroka town, claimed 13 lives at around 3 p.m. yesterday.

A coaster bus traveling from Lae to Mt Hagen lost control on a sharp bend, skidded off the road, and fell into a deep ravine.

Traffic officials said the bus was speeding and its tires were slippery, which likely caused the crash.

Police, firefighters, and rescue teams worked for hours to free trapped passengers. The last body was recovered by 6 p.m.

Thirteen people, including a baby, died at the scene. Several others were seriously injured and taken to Kapakamiliki Health Centre and Goroka Hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
