Acting chief executive officer for Road Traffic Authority [RTA] John Avira has made his first appearance at the Waigani District Court today for alleged corruption charges.

Avira was arraigned on three charges of official corruption, Misappropriation and abuse of office.

According to the police files, the RTA Acting CEO was arrested last week and is in court for alleged misuse of public funds to purchase a vehicle with RTA Funds and later registered it under his name.

However, the proceeding this morning turned out differently as the court was informed that the complainant in the case had withdrawn the complaint and police had acted after it was already withdrawn.

Magistrate Paul Nii has instructed Police to work with the complainant to sort out this issue before next mention of the matter on the 18th of November 2025.
