Government pledges major education reform at 34th SEOC conference in Popondetta

The Papua New Guinea Government has reaffirmed its commitment to overhauling the education system, with bold promises made at the official opening of the 34th Senior Education Officers Conference [SEOC] in Popondetta yesterday.
Education Minister Lucas Dekena used the platform to outline the Marape-Rosso Government’s vision to transform the sector through improved access, quality, and stronger stakeholder collaboration under the new National Education Plan 2024–2029.
"We are committed to building an inclusive, quality education system by improving connectivity with partners and making education a national priority for every child," said Minister Dekena during his keynote address.
The week-long conference, themed "Accessible Quality Education Pathways for All," brings together over 300 senior education officials from across the country. The aim is to align national and provincial efforts toward long-term education reform.
Students from local schools welcomed delegates with traditional performances, setting a vibrant tone for discussions focused on shared responsibility, education equity, and systemic change.
Minister Dekena emphasized that the SEOC is more than an annual gathering — it is a strategic forum to shape the direction of education in PNG during a critical reform period.
"This conference sets the tone for real action and accountability. The decisions we make here will impact generations to come," he added.
The conference will conclude on Friday, 26 September 2025, with outcomes expected to influence national education policies and implementation strategies in the years ahead.
