Alluvial miner stopped over alleged environmental damages
Conservation and Environment Protection Authority [CEPA] has issued a temporary halt order to a foreign-owned alluvial mining company operating in Gulf Province, due to alleged environmental damages.
The Environment Protection Order (EPO) was issued to Hell Gates Limited following complaints from senior community members about damage to the environment.
CEPA managing director Jude Tukuliya says the move allows for investigations into alleged breaches by the company.
Hell Gates Limited obtained an environment permit and mining lease in 2014 but has now been ordered to cease operations pending environmental assessments.
The company's representative received the EPO along the Tauri River.
Tukuliya emphasized that CEPA's role is to protect the environment and ensure compliance with the country's laws.
He said investors are welcome as long as they do the right thing and protect the environment.
Local community members, including Ward Councilor Dennis Sapea, welcome the move, citing concerns about the safety of the river system.
