3 dangerous inmates still at large after construction fence breakout
Police in Alotau are intensifying the hunt for three high-risk prison escapees who have been at large since November 2025.
Authorities are now calling on the local community and families of the men to assist in their peaceful surrender.
Milne Bay Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector Benjamin Kua, issued a stern appeal this week, warning the fugitives that they cannot outrun the long arm of the law forever.
"There are no shortcuts to justice," Kua said, urging the families and friends of the men to do the right thing and facilitate their return to custody before the situation escalates.
The three men escaped from Giligili Prison on November 26, 2025, during a lapse in security caused by ongoing construction at the facility. They have been identified as Andrew Tilaka Alfred, who is currently serving an 18-year sentence, John Reuben [9-year sentence] and Nile Rerep John, a remandee facing numerous charges and pending court appearances.
NBC News has been reliably informed that the trio took advantage of the construction of a new 100-man dormitory. The men reportedly cut a hole in the perimeter fence and blended in with the construction crew to walk out of the compound undetected.
In response to the breach, security protocols have been significantly tightened at Giligili Prison. Police are warning the public that harboring these individuals is a criminal offense.
