Lewas build momentum with strong Brisbane performance

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) women’s national cricket team, the Lewas, have begun their Brisbane tour in commanding fashion, delivering standout performances in trial matches while sharpening their skills ahead of the Women’s East Asia-Pacific (EAP) World Cup Qualifiers in Fiji next week.
After settling in on arrival, the Lewas wasted no time getting to work with intensive net and fielding sessions that set the tone for the week.
Their first major test came on Tuesday, when they faced the Queensland Premier Select at Sandgate Cricket Club. The Lewas posted a powerful 5/175 in 20 overs before restricting their opponents to 2/100, sealing a convincing victory.
Captain Brenda Tau led from the front, smashing a superb 104 runs in a captain’s knock that anchored the innings and set the pace for the tour.
Later that day, the Lewas dominated again in a T10 fixture, chasing down the target with ease at 2/114 against Queensland’s 5/60. Key contributions came from Konio Oala (34), Naoani Vare (31), and Holland Doriga (29). The highlight, however, was Isabel Toua’s hat-trick, a moment of brilliance that underscored the team’s all-round strength.
Beyond the field, the Lewas took time for recovery and growth, enjoying a Brisbane River ferry ride and participating in a sports psychology session designed to sharpen their mental resilience and teamwork.
With more trial matches lined up before their departure, the Lewas are using the Brisbane tour to fine-tune strategy and build cohesion. Their final match is scheduled for Thursday at Albany Cricket Club, after which the team will travel to Fiji on September 7 to contest the Women’s EAP World Cup Qualifiers.
The Lewas’ performances in Brisbane have not only boosted confidence but also sent a strong message to their regional rivals.
