The Simbu Education Board has taken a critical step towards improving education in the province with plans to establish both a National School of Excellence [NSoE] and a Provincial School of Excellence [PSoE].

Principal Education Advisor, Kutna Bepwick, confirmed that two submissions have already been made for the establishment of the schools.

The NSoE, strongly supported by Education Minister Dawa Lucas, will be located at Okule in the Gumine District. Land acquisition is in its final stages, and construction is expected to begin soon.

Meanwhile, Kerowagi Secondary School in the Kerowagi District has been identified for an upgrade to house the PSoE, allowing it to accommodate students in Grades 11 and 12.

Both institutions will offer Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics [STEM] programs in addition to standard courses, ensuring students receive a balanced and competitive education.

Mrs. Bepwick, however, outlined the need for additional funding, including K5 million earmarked for the development of a state-of-the-art STEM laboratory.

Minister Lucas has pledged to secure funding for the model NSoE in Gumine, admitting that the government recognizes Simbu’s contribution to STEM education through the work of Dr. Clement Waine.

“The establishment of these schools will give Simbu students greater access to quality education and prepare them for future opportunities,” he said.

Until the schools are completed, top Grade 10 students from Simbu will continue to be selected for existing NSoEs across the country.
