The Madang Town Clean-Up Campaign is set to become a monthly program as residents, authorities, and businesses rally to restore pride in the once-renowned coastal town ahead of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

Coordinator Eugene Wanai said the initiative, driven by the Madang Urban Local Level Government in partnership with business houses, government and non-government agencies, schools, and the wider community, is about uniting people to reclaim their town’s beauty and reputation.

“As we approach the golden jubilee of independence, we must stand united as one people and one nation,” Wanai said. “The clean-up is more than picking up rubbish, it’s about changing mindsets and taking ownership of our home.”

Madang, once celebrated as one of PNG’s most attractive towns, has in recent years been overshadowed by social issues and growing law-and-order concerns, which have affected its image.

The second clean-a-thon, held last Saturday, saw more than 20 organisations clean the Central Business District and waterfront areas, stretching from Tusbab Beach to Masin Gun, Madang Country Club, and the Kalibobo Lighthouse. Wanai said a regular schedule of monthly clean-ups will soon be published.

Locals praised the campaign as the way forward for Madang, especially with the 50th Independence celebrations fast approaching.

Resident Gus Malangen urged people to take responsibility for their waste, noting that parts of the seafront remain dumping grounds for rubbish.

“The clean-up is an opportunity to show that we care for our town and for the country as it marks 50 years of independence,” he said.
