A new chapter in East Sepik’s trade relations with China was opened today as Governor Allan Bird announced a historic connection between a local cocoa exporter and a Chinese importer, potentially marking the province’s first cocoa shipment to Shandong.

Twenty-five years after Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare forged a sister-province agreement between East Sepik and Shandong while serving in Opposition, Governor Bird’s initiative echoes the vision of the late founding father. On the eve of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary, the Governor reflected on this legacy, praising Somare’s foresight and enduring commitment to the people of Sepik.

“I connected Mr. Anton Areka from Maprik, a local cocoa exporter, with a cocoa importer from Shandong Province. It may be the first export from East Sepik to our sister province,” Bird shared in a statement on social media.

“A very exciting moment for me as we continue to create value for our people and support our local business people to prosper following the path laid by our elders.”

The move signals not only a strengthening of East Sepik’s trade footprint but also a symbolic realization of Somare’s diplomatic legacy.

Bird emphasized the significance of Somare establishing such a relationship during a politically challenging time, underscoring his deep concern for his constituents and enduring focus on long-term development.

Business leaders and community members have welcomed the announcement as a positive milestone for local industry, with many hoping this paves the way for further exports and economic collaboration with China.

As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate half a century of independence, East Sepik stands poised to honor its past by investing in its future, carrying the legacy of GC Somare into tangible opportunities for growth and prosperity.
