Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa (Parliament House)

The Office of the Speaker in the National Parliament, has opted to continue to recognize the Member for Kiriwina-Goodenough and People's Progress Party Leader, Douglas Tomuriesa as the Opposition Leader.

Speaker Job Pomat in an announcement in Parliament this morning, said that though he has received two separate names for the Opposition Leader's post, he chose to recognise the current leadership.

Mr Pomat said that the Speaker's Office received two letters, both dated 11th June 2025, but one named Chuave MP James Nomane, as the new Opposition Leader, while the other had Mr. Tomuriesa as the Opposition Leader.

He added that Mr Nomane's appointment was supported by 10 out of the total 18 Opposition Leaders, while Mr Tomuriesa's appointment had nine out of a total of 17 members who voted.

Mr Pomat further added that the Opposition should now provide an official minute of their Caucus Meeting, to correct the current conflicting records, for the Speakers Office to make a ruling.
