Western Highlands prepares for 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations

As days count down to the country's 50th Independence Golden Jubilee celebrations on 16th September, Western Highlands Province is preparing to join the rest of the country.

Governor Wai Rapa has taken the lead in the province by meeting with the business community in Mt Hagen to gauge their views on pre-independence celebrations and activities on September 16.

The Governor wants to see Western Highlands as the central province of the Highlands take the lead and start preparations.

He suggested for business houses to showcase their employees diverse cultural background by face painting, traditional attire and roadshows for their business in line with the independence celebration in Port Moresby.

Governor Rapa has tasked the provincial government to come with plans to carry out pre-independence celebrations in the remote districts like Lumusa in Mul Baiyer, Rulna in Dei and Gia in Tambul Nebilyer.

He said celebrations for the province would happen in Mount Hagen city but did not indicate the venue celebrations would be held.

The business community have been told to bring some color and fanfare to their shops and offices in the lead up to 16th September.

Meanwhile, Mt Hagen police have launched their security operations by carrying out awareness to educate the public to be vigilant and celebrate the 50th Independence anniversary in true spirit.

The police awareness also includes a temporary ban on the sale and consumption of liquor especially illegal liquor outlets in Mount Hagen city.
