PNG Table Tennis reaches new heights in regional tournament

Papua New Guinea’s table tennis team made history at the recent Pacific Mini Games, with the women’s team winning silver for the first time, described by the federation as a huge achievement for the sport in the country.
Led by team captain Maryanne Hane, the PNG women’s team fought valiantly in the gold medal playoff but fell to host nation Vanuatu. Despite the loss, the silver medal stands as the best result ever achieved by the PNG women's team in international competition.
President of the PNG Table Tennis Federation, George Shao, hailed the achievement as a breakthrough for the sport.
“It is a historical breakthrough for our women's team. And of course, we have room to move forward in the next games,” Shao said.
Team captain Hane echoed the excitement and expressed optimism for the future.
“I believe we’ll improve our training and aim for the gold medal at the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti,” she said, reflecting confidently on their performance.

Men’s team captain David Loi praised both squads, stating that the Pacific Mini Games served as an important stepping stone for PNG’s junior athletes while also providing valuable experience for the senior players.
“Our focus is now on the 2027 Pacific Games,” Loi said. “It’s not an easy task. Some of us have families, kids, some are still students but we’re determined to work hard over the next two years to earn our spot on the national team.”
Loi acknowledged the mix of emerging talent and veteran presence in the team, saying it was important to maintain momentum and build a competitive squad for future regional competitions.
Meanwhile, para-athlete and national veteran Haoda Agari reaffirmed his commitment to continue competing for PNG until he secures a long-awaited gold medal. Agari, who has consistently won silver medals since making his debut at the 2015 Pacific Games, remains determined to end his career on a high note.
“When the time is right, I may come home with a gold medal, which God has prepared, I believe,” he said.
