Fiji Prime Minister Rabuka reflects on historic ties as Pacific leaders prepare to celebrate PNG’s golden jubilee

The Government and people of Fiji have extended warm congratulations to Papua New Guinea as it prepares to celebrate its 50th Independence Anniversary in September.
Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his country’s admiration and support for PNG’s milestone, describing the bond between the two nations as deep-rooted and enduring.
Rabuka said the friendship was forged during the days of the founding leaders in the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara of Fiji and the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare of Papua New Guinea.
Speaking to NBC News in Suva, Rabuka recalled Fiji’s role in assisting Papua New Guinea during its path to independence in 1975. Now, five decades later, he says it is an honour to join PNG in celebrating its golden jubilee.
Following formal Melanesian Spearhead Group [MSG] meetings, Prime Ministers Rabuka and James Marape held an informal catch-up where they exchanged stories and memories of the long-standing friendship between the two nations.
PM Rabuka said the journey has been a shared one and as Prime Minister, he is proud to walk alongside Papua New Guinea as it marks this historic chapter.
In response, James Marape reaffirmed PNG’s commitment to regional solidarity.
Marape said Papua New Guinea has always stood by Fiji during both good and challenging times, adding that PNG values the brotherhood and will continue to strengthen it.
As a gesture of mutual respect and appreciation, the two leaders exchanged traditional gifts and pledged to continue nurturing the long-standing friendship between their countries.
Prime Minister Marape also extended a warm invitation to leaders and citizens across the Pacific to join in celebrating Papua New Guinea’s 50th year of independence.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway across the country for the September 16th milestone occasion, which is expected to draw regional leaders, dignitaries, and international partners in celebration of PNG’s historic journey since gaining independence in 1975.
