Torrential rain has brought Alotau to a standstill today, with flash flooding and landslides prompting the closure of businesses, government offices, and parts of the Milne Bay provincial hospital.

Shops in the town were forced to close due to flood damage and growing security concerns. Some retail outlets reported water inundation, while others remained shut as a precaution. Government services near the Goilanai area have also been suspended.

Provincial Administrator Dr. Igo Gari confirmed he has directed the closure of government offices in affected areas and instructed technical divisions to begin clearing blocked drainage systems and landslide debris. He said services may resume later this week depending on weather conditions.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Benjamin Kua reported that landslide damaged the rear section of Vans Cash and Carry, allowing water to flood the premises and wash out goods. Kua said the situation is now under control, preventing furter looting at the store.

Meanwhile, the Alotau Provincial Hospital has scaled down operations. Its Accident and Emergency Outpatient and X-ray departments have downgraded services as cleanup efforts continue.

The Papua New Guinea Fire Service has issued a warning to residents living near flood-prone creeks and hilly areas, urging them to relocate to safer ground as heavy rains are expected to persist.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
