PNG Power Limited [PPL] has commissioned two new transformers at its Bomana and Kanudi substations, marking a major step toward improving the electricity supply in Port Moresby.

The transformers recently delivered by Kumul Consolidated Holdings [KCH] have been energized and are now fully operational. Valued at K4.2 million, the new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce load pressure at key substations in Konedobu, Waigani, and Moitaka, helping to minimize power outages across the capital’s high-demand areas.

“This will relieve the overloading conditions we experience at the substations, particularly offloading the strain at Konedobu and Waigani,” PPL General Manager for Transmission and Distribution, Simo Kaupa said.

Bomana substation, which has been relying on the Moitaka substation since last year, will now benefit from the newly installed transformer to ensure greater power stability and supply consistency.

PPL Chief Executive Officer Paul Bayly highlighted the commissioning as a milestone in the utility’s ongoing efforts to improve services.

“This is another step forward in PPL’s mission to provide better and more reliable service to our customers, who are ultimately the reason we operate,” Bayly said.

KCH Executive Manager Richard Rowaro, who witnessed the commissioning, emphasized the importance of the development as part of the government's broader plan to strengthen PNG’s power infrastructure.

“This is part of the Government’s support to re-stabilize PNG Power, under the PPL Recovery Program. From the K211 million allocated to KCH, we have already received K111 million to address the city’s chronic power issues,” Rowaro explained.

The new transformers are projected to last at least 30 years with proper maintenance and management.
