Locals mourn passing of Nerre Papke – The unsung hero behind Minj’s growth and progress

As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its 50th golden Independence Anniversary, many of the leaders who laid the foundation for the country’s development will not be here to witness the historic occasion.
Though they have passed on, their contributions remain a living legacy etched into the communities they served and the institutions they helped build.
Among them was the late Nerre Papke, a silent achiever from Kopung Village in the Minj District of Jiwaka Province.
Late Papke was the first businessman from the Ngeneka Tribe, a trailblazer whose entrepreneurial spirit laid the groundwork for many local developments. He was instrumental in establishing Muruka Primary School, helping bring access to education to generations of students in the region.

A devout Christian and community leader, Papke was a dedicated Deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the PNG [ELC-PNG], actively contributing to the growth and development of the Kuma Circuit. His faith-driven leadership extended well beyond the church pews, reaching into community building and service.
He was also known for his role in the growth of Minj Town, where his business ventures supported local economic activity. Most notably, he secured the first land title for Minj Station, the very site that now houses the Jiwaka Provincial Headquarters.
Recognized as a peacemaker, a generational leader, and a strong advocate for education, his life and leadership were honoured during his funeral service held at Kopung Village on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Late Nerre Papke passed away at the age of 78 on June 12, 2025, at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital. He remained an active servant of the Lutheran Church until his final days.
He is survived by three wives, eight sons, three daughters, and many grandchildren, who now carry forward the legacy of a man who gave much to his church, his community, and his country.
