Rimbu returns home to bolster Hunters mid-season campaign

The SP PNG Hunters have confirmed the return of star hooker Judah Rimbu for the remainder of the 2025 Hostplus Cup season.
Rimbu, who was last year’s recipient of the prestigious 2024 QRL Petero Civoniceva Medal - awarded to the competition’s best and fairest- returns to the Hunters after a brief stint with English Super League club Castleford Tigers. His departure from the Tigers comes as part of a mid-season restructuring by the club.
Hunters Head Coach Paul Aiton welcomed Rimbu’s return, saying the 23-year-old brings renewed energy to the team.
“I am happy to have Judah back for the rest of the season. He’s a quality player, he brings energy to the club and the boys love to have him around,” Aiton said.
“This is his home, we’re like family and his presence will definitely make an impact on the squad.”
Speaking on his return to Papua New Guinea, Rimbu expressed his determination to contribute to the team’s success.
“While things didn’t work out as planned in the UK, I’m determined to come back home, work hard and help the team have another successful season, hoping to build on what we did last year,” he said.
SP PNG Hunters chief executive officer Scott Barker also praised the young hooker, emphasizing his character and potential.
“Judah’s not only a good player but a genuinely good guy,” Barker said.
“I understand that sometimes things like this happen and we are more than happy to have a quality player like him back in our squad.
"He’s young and he’s got more to give. We will keep on pushing him to help reach his full potential.”
Rimbu arrived in Port Moresby today and is expected to rejoin the team later this week, resuming training ahead of key Hostplus Cup fixtures.
His return comes at a crucial stage in the Hunters’ 2025 campaign, bolstering the squad with added depth, experience and leadership as they gear up for a strong finish to the season.
