Reserve police officer arrested for sexual assault in Kundiawa

A 60-year-old reserve constable attached to Kundiawa Police Station was recently arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a girl at the Family Sexual Violence Unit [FSVU] office at the Kundiawa Police Station on December 25, 2024.
Simbu Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang confirmed this incident through a press statement.
He said the reserve constable was working at Kundiawa Police Station when the incident happened.
According to the police report, it was alleged that the girl, who was working on the highway, was picked up by the reserve constable, alleging that she had escaped from police custody.
He then escorted her to the police station, where he was approached by some regular police officers who told him to detain the suspect if she had actually escaped from the police cells.
Instead, he took her to the FSVU officers and told the officers that he would interview her in the FSVU office.
While inside the office, he sexually assaulted her.
The female victim was overpowered by the man, but she managed to scream, and he let her go.
"The lady went and reported the matter to her parents, who then reported it to the police. All police files were ready, but the reserve constable went into hiding. Until last month, he was sighted, arrested, and brought to the police station. He was formally charged and will appear in court. I want to thank my members for a job well done in apprehending the reserve constable, who was on the run for some months," PPC Rubiang said.
PPC Rubiang also issued a warning to his officers that anyone in police uniform who steps out of line will be dealt with accordingly. He said his Internal Affairs officers in Kundiawa are doing a good job.
He stated that this will signal rogue police officers that they have no place in the force if they step out of line or abuse the uniform they are wearing.
Meanwhile the reserve constable is detained in the police cell awaiting his court date.
