Madang’s Sumkar district purchases K1.3m landing vessel

The people of Sumkar District in Madang province will now have enhanced sea transportation across the district.
This follows the purchase of a K1.3 million landing vessel by the Sumkar DDA to boost its efforts in strengthening local infrastructure, particularly in remote and underserved areas that depend heavily on maritime transport.
The MV Scorpio, under the command of Captain Tom Maob and a two-man crew, completed its maiden voyage after it set sail from Port Moresby on the 31st of May, then onto Alotau and finally arrived in Madang on Saturday.
The vessel was purchased at K1.3 million from Lamana Development Corporation,
Sumkar MP and Petroleum Vice Minister Alexander Suguman Orme when welcoming the arrival of the vessel said MV Scorpio is more than just a vessel, it represents their vision for improved connectivity, reliable service delivery, and economic empowerment for its people.
Mr.Orme explained the vessel will carry both cargo and passengers and will be vital in transporting medical supplies, school materials, building resources, and economic goods to remote coastal and island communities within the Sumkar District, and assist nearby communities
