Sir Bob Dadae slams AG for undermining judicial integrity

The Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae, has strongly condemned recent remarks by the Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Pila Niningi, accusing National Court Judges of bias and nepotism.
The Attorney General’s comments, which were published on the front page of the Post Courier yesterday, has sparked widespread concerns across the judiciary, the PNG Law Society, and the broader public.
Describing the statements as a serious attack on the integrity, and credibility of the Judiciary, Sir Bob warned that making sweeping allegations without evidence, is not only unjustified but also dangerous.
He said if there are concerns regarding specific judges, they should be addressed through the appropriate channels, and not aired through broad public accusations that tarnish the reputation of the entire judicial system.
The Governor General highlighted the critical role the judiciary plays in upholding the rule of law, safeguarding democratic rights, and maintaining national stability.
He also praised the professionalism and dedication of the country's judges, stating that they are well-qualified and have earned a reputation for integrity over many years.
Sir Bob Dadae has called on Minister Niningi to retract his comments, cautioning that such public statements, undermine the confidence in the judiciary, and pose a threat to its independence.
He also appealed to the public to respect the country’s judicial institutions, stressing that a strong and independent judiciary is essential for Papua New Guinea’s democratic development, and long-term stability.
The Governor General said such statements that cast doubt on the impartiality of our judges only serve to weaken the democracy, they are currently enjoying.
His condemnation adds to the growing chorus of concerns amid ongoing debates over judicial independence and governance in Papua New Guinea.
Minister Niningi has since denied making any derogatory statements against the national judges and the judiciary, and announced that he will be holding a Press Conference upon his return to the country this week, to clear his name.
He said that his comments were basically on the delayed judgement by judges and the strict approach taken by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission, for judges to deliver reserved judgements on time.
Minister Niningi was alleged to have made these comments, during the installation of the new residential judge in Hela Province recently.
