Kula FC to debut in Premier Soccer League, representing Milne Bay

Eighteen local boys from Alotau will proudly represent Milne Bay Province in this season’s Premier Soccer League, under the newly launched franchise Kula Football Club — the league’s ninth official team.
Backed by the Alotau District and currently in talks with potential major sponsors, Kula FC marks a historic first for Milne Bay in top-tier football, aiming to create long-overdue pathways for local talent in a province known for its passion for soccer.
Kula FC patron and Alotau MP Ricky Morris told NBC News that the club's formation aligns with the district’s broader sports development plan.
“We have a sports plan this term, and for soccer, this is one avenue we're supporting to provide exposure and opportunity for our youths,” Morris said.
“Alotau Soccer Association is affiliated with PNGFA, and this initiative gives our local players a platform to compete at the national level.”
Morris emphasized the significance of launching this initiative ahead of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary, calling it ‘a foot in the door’ and the beginning of a great journey.
Club pioneer Chappy Lubeian said the players are ready for a tough but exciting debut season.
“It will be a great challenge. It won’t be easy for us as newcomers, but we won’t underestimate ourselves. We’ll give our best for our team,” Lubeian said.
The team will travel to Port Moresby tomorrow, where all players are set to sign their season contracts before going straight into camp. They will train under the leadership of coach Percy Mataio, who will guide the squad through their debut campaign.
According to Morris, the Alotau District Development Corporation currently owns the Kula FC franchise and is leading negotiations with prospective sponsors, with official announcements expected during the season.
The majority of the squad hails from the Alotau Soccer Association, with less than 10 players recruited from outside the province.
Kula FC plays its first match this weekend, and the Milne Bay community in Port Moresby is being encouraged to show their support and cheer on their homegrown talent.
