DataCo launches school digital connectivity program in Jiwaka

To improve digital learning, PNG DataCo has partnered with Mt Hagen City Authority and Jiwaka Provincial Government to launch two School Digital Connectivity Programs in the respective provinces.
Through public-private partnerships, these initiatives will connect 12 secondary and vocational schools to high-speed internet and provide essential digital tools to support teaching and learning.
On Friday, 22nd May, PNG DataCo Chairman Dr. Thomas Webster and his team launched the School Digital Connectivity Program for Jiwaka at Minj, during the joint opening of the Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited [MVIL] office.
These schools are Minj FODE, Minj Secondary, Kundjip Secondary, Banz Lutheran Secondary, Anglimb Secondary, and Kudjip Nazarene Secondary School.
Each school will receive a minimum of 10 Mbps or megabits per second paid bandwidth plus 10 Mbps free under DataCo’s Community Service Obligation [CSO], totaling 70 Mbps paid and 70 Mbps free across the program.
Additionally, 60 laptops [approximately 10 per school], WiFi access points, and internet filtering devices will be provided to ensure safe and effective digital learning. The total project cost is K518,034, with the Jiwaka Provincial Administration contributing K100,000 for installation and setup, as well as covering ongoing monthly internet charges.
Dr Webster says the world is changing with the technology, and PNG must also cope with the technology.
"In the next 10 to 20 years, PNG will no longer be the same. Therefore, we must have a transformed generation that must be ready to adapt to the changes", Dr Webster said.
These programs align with the Government’s Digital Transformation Agenda, promoting equitable access to digital resources and supporting ICT integration in education.
