Case to act as deterrent

A prominent law firm in the country is preparing to file a human rights lawsuit against the individuals involved in the assault of a mother and daughter in Madang province earlier this month.
This upcoming case will be the second legal action taken against the perpetrators involved, as the Madang Police have also initiated criminal proceedings against them.
The law firm Laken Lepatu Aigilo Lawyers confirmed with NBC News that they officially registered the victims as their clients this week.
Principal lawyer of the firm Laken Aigilo said his firm's intention is to make this case serve as a strong deterrent against future violations of people's rights, particularly committed by foreign businesses operating in the country.
Madang Police are actively assisting the law firm by providing necessary evidence to support the human rights suit.
The criminal prosecution by the police will proceed separately but concurrently with the civil case.
In addition to legal actions, the law firm has further provided the mother and daughter with K1000 to help them engage in income-generating activities while their case is being pursued through the human rights court process.
Aigilo said the support given by the law firm aims to empower the victims as they seek justice and recovery.
He said his firm is committed to seeking justice for the mother and daughter and marginalized and vulnerable people in the society.
