Board Chairman of the Madang Provincial Health Authority, Dr Boga Figa; said the board has taken note of last Thursday’s argument between his deputy, Young Wadau and the acting Chief Executive Officer of MaPHA, Dr Sammy Thomas.

The argument occurred during a meeting that doctors had requested with the board to discuss various issues affecting the smooth running of the Madang Provincial Hospital. It started when the Acting CEO confronted the Deputy Board Chairman as the meeting was starting and Mr Wadau was explaining the reason for the meeting.

In a circular issued on Tuesday this week to all staff of Madang PHA and copied to board members, the acting CEO and all directors, Dr Figa stated that, “the board, especially his office, has taken due note of the matter and understands the concerns it may raise amongst staff.”

Dr Figa also assured everyone that the board is not taking the matter lightly and is working towards a fair and just resolution. He said that in pursuit of an appropriate pathway forward, the Board is working with the Department of Health to explore all available means for an amicable resolution.

He added, “the legal team of the National Health Department is conducting its own inquiry into the incident, and will be meeting with the Board and the Senior Executive Management team later this week to iron out the matter. The matter will be thoroughly investigated as such situations can create uncertainty.”

Figa emphasised that the priority now is to establish a clear understanding of the cause factors and to determine the most appropriate course of action and way forward.

He said, “In the meantime, the Board is determined to ensuring a professional and respectful work environment for all staff members during this difficult times, given the limited resources that Madang PHA has.”

Dr Figa appreciates the understanding and patience of all staff as the board and department works on resolving the issue. He is also confident they will reach a resolution that upholds the principles of fairness and accountability.
