Three Chinese nationals arrested in relation to Yaho Supermarket assault case

Three Chinese nationals were arrested late Monday afternoon in Madang for their alleged involvement in the Yaho Supermarket assault case more than a week ago.
Their arrests bring to six the total number of people arrested over the assault case, which sparked a nationwide call for justice for the Madang mother and her daughter, who were captured on video whilst being beaten by workers inside the warehouse of the said Supermarket.
Their arrests end the final phase of police investigations into the assault case of May 9th, 2025.
The trio were invited to the police station and formally charged with two counts each of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm and Deprivation of Liberty.
Both are criminal charges.
The investigation team confiscated their passports and work permits for proper screening and examination.
They were released on a K4 000 bail each- K 2000 per count.
Following their arrests, Provincial Police Commander for Madang, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, issued a stark reminder to all members of the community to act immediately whenever they witness an offence being committed, about to be committed, or just occurring.
His reminder comes in light of the recent events, notably the arrest of three Chinese nationals in connection with a serious assault on a mother and her child at Yaho Supermarket in Madang.
Baim said, "The incident underscores the importance of prompt intervention and the collective responsibility of everyone, whether locals or expatriates to maintain law and order. If you are in a position of authority or have the power to intervene, it is your duty to act without delay to prevent any criminal activity from occurring or continuing. Failure to do so not only jeopardizes public safety but also undermines the rule of law that binds us all.”
He further emphasized that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of nationality or background.
PPC Baim said this incident serves as a warning that no one is above the law.
He added that police will continue to enforce the law stringently and encouraged the community to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
"Community cooperation is vital in preventing crime and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice swiftly. The message is clear: whether you are a citizen or an expatriate, the law covers everyone. Everyone has a role to play in maintaining peace, safety, and order in our society," PPC Baim emphasized.
