He's calling on all Papua New Guineans to take ownership of the 50 years independence anniversary and prepare activities that truly reflect PNG's journey.

Mr Marape said " this is not just a government event, it's a national celebration for all our people, we want the 50th anniversary to be the mother of all celebrations. let us come together as one nation, many tribes, many tongues, but one people under one flag."

He said PNG will celebrate a commemorative year of activities from September 16 this year till September 15 next year. Activities will include the PNG Games in the Southern Highlands, community festivals, educational campaigns, inter-governmental programs, and major infrastructure launches.

"As we approach 50 years, let us rise above our differences. Let us celebrate our journey together. Let us look forward with faith and work as one nation, under God, toward the next 50 years", the prime minister said.
