Tanda’s termination raises press freedom concerns

The 3-week suspension and now termination of radio personality, Cullighan Tanda, by Kalang FM - has raised grave concerns about a free press and democracy in the country.
Mr. Tanda, who hosts the popular FM100 talk back show, was allegedly issued these harsh disciplinary measures after interviewing East Sepik Governor, last month.
He resumed duties yesterday morning following the 3-weeks suspension lapse only to be met with a termination letter from the Management.
Mr Tanda wrote a letter in response to his suspension on 7th May - a copy cited by this newsroom expressed “deep concern over the manner in which the disciplinary matter has been executed.”
He called for a clear indication of specific policies he's breached and among other requests that immediate revocation of his suspension, full reinstatement to his position of Government relations Manager and reimbursement of his 3 weeks salary.
PNG Media Council President Neville Choi has called on the Government to crack down on the board and Management of Telikom PNG Limited and stop the suppression of media personnel who work for government owned media organizations.
He's also called on ICAC to investigate the matter for corrupt conduct to establish if processes were used to penalize Mr Tanda and an EMTV employee.
East Sepik Provincial MP, Allan Bird, says it's frightening the road the country is taking about the ruling cartel's actions against journalists in the country.
He expressed deep disappointment in the way the Kalang Management have responded to his appearance on the FM100 talk back show.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Communications Marsh Narewec said to meet with the Secretariat on this matter.
Meantime, Prime Minister James Marape told PNG Haus Bung that he's instructed for information on Tanda’s termination.
NBC National News approached Kalang Advertising Limited for comments this afternoon and were advised, a statement will be released later.
