Mothers in Aluki and surrounding communities in Morobe’s Nawae District are set to receive a life-changing gift this year a fully equipped birthing house, announced as a special Mother’s Day initiative by local MP Theo Pelgen.

During a visit to Aluki village this week, MP Pelgen described the upcoming maternity facility as a “transformative mother’s day gift” that will bring essential maternal healthcare right to the community's doorstep.

The birthing house will include six beds for labor and postnatal recovery, inbuilt showers to support hygiene for new mothers, a waiting room for families, and support from three experienced midwives.

“This is more than just a new facility as it is a mother’s day gift to you women of Aluki and nearby villages, who have long awaited improved maternal care," Mr. Pelgen said.

"With this birthing house, we will ensure safer deliveries, greater comfort, and a healthier future for mothers and newborns."

The facility aims to ease the burden on the Situm and Buhaluc Health Centres and significantly improve maternal health outcomes in the rural district.

Pelgen pledged to fast-track the project, vowing to secure funding and ensure the facility is completed within this year.

“We will find funds to ensure this facility is built this year and completed because it is a first of its kind initiative for the mothers,” he said.

In addition to the birthing house, the Nawae MP announced plans for further development in Aluki, including a 2-in-1 classroom, solar-powered facility for sustainable electricity, and sanitation improvements with new toilet facilities.

The villagers warmly welcomed the MP’s visit, remarking that it has been 45 years since a local MP had last set foot in their community.
