Continuous rain affects communities

The continuous rainfall in Western Highlands Province has led to flooding, landslides, and other natural disasters that has damaged homes and the livelihood of people.
One community in the Mul LLG of Mul Baiyer District faced this natural catastrophe earlier this week when a landslip caused flooding that cost the life of a 50-year-old woman and left families displaced and damaged food crops, where agriculture is the source of their livelihood.
People from this affected community of Kela tell NBC News that natural disasters are an unexpected turn of events that people do not have control over.
They also said the continuous rainfall in this part of the region will have an adverse effect, especially on those living close to mountains and rivers.
The Kela community stressed that while they continue to experience rain every day, eventually a natural disaster may strike again.
They are calling on the National and Provincial Disaster Offices as well as the Provincial government and the District Development Authorities [DDA] to conduct awareness on measures to be taken when a natural disaster strikes.
" These authorities must come down and see for themselves the extent of the damage caused by the natural disaster and make awareness and campaign on ways, signs, and warnings that we can be made aware of during times of disaster," they said.
Only then can people be made aware of the signs and warnings of an approaching natural disaster and be ready to overcome it without even costing a life", said the grieving locals of the landslip-affected Kela village.
They are also appealing to the local DDA of Mul Baiyer and the Western Highlands Provincial Government [WHPG] to make relief support available for them as they are now displaced with their food gardens and homes destroyed leaving them vulnerable.
