Police officer charged in relation to 9-mile Morobe block eviction in 2024

A senior police officer attached with NCD police has been arrested and charged on two counts of murder, in Port Moresby yesterday.
Chief Inspector Tap Opai was formally interviewed by the homicide squad at the Boroko Police station, in relation to the alleged illegal eviction at 9mile's Morobe block on September 19th 2024.
The forceful removal of residents there had claimed the lives of two people, causing severe injuries to others and damages to properties.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for NCD and Central Command, Benjamine Turi stated that the eviction was illegal, and no proper processes were followed.
"This is an example of us police officers failing to adhere to simple instructions of executing court orders, the orders are to be issued by the District, National or Supreme court, for police to facilitate"
Commander Turi assured the affected community that, investigations will continue to identify other officers implicated and they will be dealt with accordingly.
It has been seven [7] months since the devastating incident, with no investigation progress, until an arrest yesterday.
He admits the prolonged delay in probing the matter is due to police negligence.
The NCD and Central Police boss expressed sympathy over the tragic loss of their loved ones, further assuring, justice will take its course.
Meantime, Mr Turi used the occasion to remind the general public of proper processes in dealing with evictions.
