Police in Madang Province have issued a strong warning to all candidates contesting in the local level government election in the province and the Usino/ Bundi by- election to stay within the confines of the law whilst out on the campaign trail.

Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, issued the warning on Wednesday as candidates began to take on the campaign trail actively.

Baim specifically emphasized the need for candidates to educate and discourage their supporters from overloading vehicles whilst out and about campaigning.

"Overloading is against the traffic rules as it can be hazardous. It can lead to nasty accidents and can be fatal," PPC Baim said.

He emphasized that any form of unlawful behavior, including vehicle overloading, drunkenness, drug use, fighting, or disorderly conduct, will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

"Offenders will face full legal consequences, including arrest and prosecution. Election campaigns should be conducted within the boundaries of the law,” stressed PPC Baim.

He added candidates, and their supporters are responsible for ensuring that their conduct remains lawful and respectful.

"We will hold accountable anyone involved in illegal activities linked to the elections, as we are committed to upholding the integrity and credibility of this democratic process, " he said.

The PPC has also called on all election stakeholders to cooperate fully and to prioritize peaceful engagement and respect others’ rights. They have also appealed to the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unlawful activity to the authorities.

Acting Superintendent Baim said the success of these elections depends on the collective efforts of everyone involved.
