Volleyball tournament to raise funds for new church building

A local village in Rigo District of Central province will host a week-long volleyball tournament to generate funds for the construction of a new church.

The tournament staged by Kore community is expected to convene local talents from 20 different villages of Central Province with the men's open division to take the centre stage.

Event coordinator Mr. Tau Vini said they are looking forward to a competitive and entertaining volleyball games from all teams and hopefully generate enough revenue for the United Church building in the event scheduled from September 23-28.

"The tournament is purposely to raise funds for the construction of a new Church building in the village," he said.

"More than 20 villages and more than 30 teams are expected to participate in the tournament.

"This is the second volleyball tournament to be hosted by Kore Golo Calvary United Church. The first tournament was successfully held in 2020.

"This is an open men’s tournament. All funds raised will go towards the new Church building which will commence in early 2025.”

Keapara, Mamalo, Daroakomana, Kaparoko are amongst some teams from Rigo coast, inland and central, competing in the tournament which started today.

Tournament director Mr. Vini urged the participants to uphold Christian values and behaviours as this is a church organised program.

He said there are no restrictions for representative players as this is an opportunity to impart their skills and expertise to the up and coming young local players from the mostly rural villages.

Cash prizes and awards will be given out at the end of the tournament to the first, second and third placed teams including consolation for outstanding players.

The tournament will conclude with the presentation of awards on Saturday, 28 September.

Vini said they have also received financial support from various individuals and corporate entities towards the tournament.
