Wabag to host kickboxing championship next month

The PNG Kickboxing Federation is preparing for another amateur Kickboxing championship next month.

Billed as the Highlands Regional Kickboxing Championship, the event is scheduled for March 16th – 17th in Wabag town, Enga Province.

Seven provinces in the region are expected to attend with fighters as young as 12 years participate in both the female and male divisions respectively.

Tournament director Kaupa Omena says more than 150 fighters will take part in the two days’ event.

Omena says from this tournament, selectors will select a squad to represent the Highlands region at the Four Regional Championships in June.

Omena has urge all presidents, managers, trainers and officials to bring one fighter as per the divisions are concerned.

He added that preparation is progressing smoothly and is looking forward to delivering a successful event.

Meantime, the Federation's President Stanley Nandex says the event is part of a lead up match for the Kickboxing World Cup in Spain in November.

Nandex says, selection towards the world cup will be a tough process and only the best fighters will be selected to represent the country at the world meet.

Nandex further elaborated that the four regional championship in June will determine the full team for the World Cup.  

PNG will be looking forward to teaming up with Australia and New Zealand as a strong Oceania team from the Region for the World Championships in Spain.
