Resource companies test emergency response skills in Lae
Emergency response teams from Papua New Guinea’s major mining, oil and gas companies are testing their skills under pressure as the National Emergency Response Challenge (NERC) 2026 enters its second day in Lae.
Hosted by the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA), the competition brings together emergency response teams from across the resource sector to demonstrate their capabilities in rescue operations, firefighting, medical emergencies and incident management.
The 2026 challenge marks the competition’s return after a seven-year break, providing an opportunity for industry emergency responders to assess their readiness and learn from one another.
Harmony Hidden Valley Mine is among the participating companies, competing alongside Newmont Lihir, Barrick New Porgera, K92 Mining, New Simberi, Santos and Ramu NiCo.
The teams are being tested on their technical skills, leadership, decision-making and ability to work together during simulated emergency situations.
Harmony Hidden Valley Mine Safety, Health, Security and Risk Manager Mike Merena said the competition provides an important opportunity for emergency response personnel to measure their capabilities against industry peers and share practical knowledge.
“The National Emergency Response Challenge provides an excellent platform for our Emergency Response Team to showcase their skills, learn from other industry professionals and strengthen their ability to respond effectively to real-life emergencies.
“Our team works tirelessly to ensure the safety of our people, communities and operations. Participation in NERC reflects Harmony’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of emergency preparedness and operational excellence.” Merena said.
He said the team’s participation reflects the company’s focus on training, skills development and operational readiness.
Beyond the competition, NERC provides a platform for emergency response professionals across the resource sector to exchange knowledge, share best practices and strengthen cooperation.
The challenge continues in Lae, with awards scheduled to be presented on Friday, October 23.
