Putt double fires Capras into preliminary final
A double by Papua New Guinea international Nixon Putt has propelled the Central Queensland Capras into the Hostplus Cup preliminary finals following a 28-24 victory over the Ipswich Jets on Sunday at Aurizon Stadium in Queensland, Australia.
The PNG Kumuls enforcer set the tone early, crossing for his first try in the 10th minute in front of a boisterous home crowd.
“I think it means so much for this region,” Putt said after the match.
“Everyone gets around us whether we win or lose. They have stuck by us over the years, so it means a lot to the players. The fans have been awesome.”
The Western Highlander completed his double in the 68th minute, providing the crucial buffer as the Capras held off a late surge by the Jets.
The Capras have continued to defy the odds this season, securing a top-four finish and moving to within one win of a grand final appearance.
“As a group, everyone stands up for each other and works hard,” Putt said.
“Even when we make mistakes or lose, we just stick together and focus on the next game. It’s great to get this win at home, and we’re looking forward to the next two games.”
Putt was one of five PNG players in the Capras lineup, alongside Kumuls trio Valentine Richard, Roderick Tai, and Zev John, as well as forward Khaiya Waiembi.
Putt spoke of the strong bond between Rockhampton and Papua New Guinea, stating that the region is a home away from home for the growing contingent of PNG players.
“The people and the region make us feel at home here. It feels like our second home,” he said.
“This win was also very special for us. One of the local fathers who looks after us, who we call Papa, had a big operation this week ahead of the finals. We dedicated this game to him and got the win for him.”
Putt finished the match with two tries and 207 run metres in a dominant display for Central Queensland.
The Capras will face the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the preliminary final on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 2.10pm at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
