Madang police gearing up for 51st Independence celebrations

Madang police are prepared for the province's two- day 51st Independence celebrations from 15th to 16th September.

Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Robert Baim said policing arrangements have been activated across all six districts to ensure the celebrations are conducted in a safe, peaceful, and well- managed manner.

The PPC has instructed all police personnel to remain highly vigilant before, during, and after all official programs and community activities connected to the independence festivities.

He also said that members of the public can expect increased police presence in key areas, including main event venues, town centres, transport routes, and other locations where big crowds are expected.

Superintendent Baim emphasized, "Police will strictly deal with anyone who attempts to disrupt the celebrations or undermines public safety."

He warned that those who intend to cause trouble will face consequences under the law.

“We will not tolerate anyone trying to disrupt the celebrations. You will be severely dealt with according to law,” Baim said.

He further reminded the people of Madang that Independence is not only about celebration but also about meaningful reflection and renewed commitment.

"This important national milestone should encourage a positive transformation in attitudes and behavior—moving from negative practices to constructive actions that strengthen both communities and the nation.

“Independence is a time for a shift in our mindsets—change attitudes from bad to good. Think of what little things we can do for the development of the province and the country,” the PPC said.

He added that citizens must also understand that development requires support from everyone—not only institutions and leaders.

Baim urged residents to play their part by maintaining a good mindset, respecting one another, and avoiding actions that can create disorder during the Independence period.

“If you don’t want to be part of development for Madang, you better pack up and go home. There could be better things for you to do at home than just staying in urban areas without a good mind frame,” he said.

In addition to maintaining peace and order, Madang police is also reminding small craft owners and boat operators to take seriously the advice and warnings issued by the national weather service during periods of adverse weather.

People are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow official guidance for safety.

PPC Baim stressed that police rescue capacity can be limited during dangerous weather conditions. He therefore urged all concerned parties to prioritize safety over schedules and journeys.

“All small craft owners must take heed of the warning from the National Weather Service. Stop travelling in bad weather conditions.

"Police can’t go into bad weather to rescue you. We are human beings just like you, with very limited resources—so be very mindful of that,” said PPC Baim.

He further encouraged cooperation among community members, including friends and families who may urge others to travel despite warnings.

According to PPC Baim, the safest decision during storms or hazardous weather is to stay ashore until conditions improve.

Baim is calling on all residents, event participants, and visitors to celebrate responsibly.

The command also urged people to observe lawful conduct at all times, avoid disturbances, and respect public peace.

"I also urge communities to refrain from harmful behaviour such as vandalism, fighting, and any acts that could threaten lives and properties.

“People of Madang must celebrate in colours without any interference,” Baim said.

Meanwhile, the special Independence police operation will be launched on Monday.
