NBC secures exclusive rights to broadcast Sheilla Yama’s IBF title fight

Papua New Guineans across the nation will be able to watch homegrown boxing star Sheilla Yama defend her world title live next month, following a major broadcast deal announced by the National Broadcasting Corporation [NBC].

NBC has secured the exclusive rights to air Yama’s upcoming International Boxing Federation [IBF] International Super Lightweight Title defence against challenger Jessica Messina. The bout is scheduled for Saturday, 8 August 2026, in Auckland, New Zealand.

The historic event will be broadcast live nationwide across both NBC 1 television and NBC Radio, ensuring fans from urban centres to remote communities can follow the action.

NBC Managing Director Kora Nou described the upcoming title defence as a landmark moment for Papua New Guinean sport, highlighting Yama's rapid ascension on the international stage.

"With an unbeaten record and growing international attention, Yama is emerging as one of the Pacific's most exciting boxing prospects," Nou said. "NBC is proud to bring this historic fight to the nation, allowing fans across Papua New Guinea to cheer on Yama as she chases world title glory."

Born in Papua New Guinea and currently fighting out of Hamilton, New Zealand, the undefeated super lightweight has built a reputation for her aggressive ring presence and explosive finishing power.

Yama captured the IBF International Super Lightweight belt in May 2026 with a dominant stoppage victory over previously unbeaten Chinese contender Haini Mulataiaili. Her rising resume also features decisive victories against Louise Creaven, Rishon Harris, and Nailini Helu.
