DWU’s 30-year journey inspires nation-building through education and partnership

The Divine Word University [DWU] Lae Alumni Chapter recently hosted the DWU 30th Anniversary Fundraising Corporate Dinner at the Lae International Hotel, bringing together leaders from government, education, industry, alumni, and the wider community to celebrate the university's contribution to Papua New Guinea's development.

The event highlighted DWU's legacy of producing skilled professionals and leaders over the past three decades while raising funds to support community initiatives and the university's anniversary celebrations.

Morobe Provincial Health Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kipas Binga, who delivered the keynote address, emphasized the vital role DWU has played in strengthening the country's healthcare sector. He acknowledged the university's significant contribution to training doctors and health professionals and highlighted the importance of practical partnerships such as the Memorandum of Agreement between DWU and Angau Memorial Provincial Hospital.

Dr. Binga said Papua New Guinea's growing population continues to place increasing demands on the health system, requiring not only qualified professionals but also individuals committed to service, responsibility, and leadership. He said DWU's training programs are helping prepare future healthcare workers to meet these challenges effectively.

DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs reflected on the university's remarkable journey over the past 30 years. He said milestone was a celebration of opportunities and achievements, reflecting that DWU has grown from a small institute into a university with five campuses, producing more than 25,000 graduates and over 100 doctors.

Professor Gibbs thanked sponsors and supporters for their contributions and commended the DWU Lae Alumni Chapter for organizing the fundraising initiative. He encouraged continued support for the university's mission across Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.

DWU Lae Alumni Chapter Vice President Ludwina Philemon welcomed guests and spoke of the strong bonds created through the university. She said supporting DWU means investing in the next generation of leaders and professionals who will contribute to the nation's future.

Platinum sponsor representative and PNG Mining and Petroleum Hospitality Services CEO Jonathan Corotan spoke on the importance of integrity, service, and seizing opportunities. He emphasized the strong partnership between education and industry and announced internship opportunities for DWU graduates to help bridge the gap between education and employment.

Funds raised from the dinner will support DWU's 30th Anniversary activities and contribute to community projects, including support for ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital. The event served as a powerful reminder of DWU's lasting impact and its continued commitment to education, partnership, and national development.
