A historic State visit concluded on Wednesday at Jacksons International Airport with the departure of Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta.

The visit marked the opening of a new diplomatic chapter between Port Moresby and Dili.

Before departing Papua New Guinea, President Ramos-Horta made a final diplomatic stop at the official residence of the Indonesian Ambassador to PNG.

The warm welcome by Indonesia’s Ambassador-designate to PNG, Okto Dorinus Marik, reflected the close personal ties shared between the two gentlemen.

Mr Marik previously served as Indonesia’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste.

Following a light lunch, President Jose Ramos-Horta departed for Jacksons International Airport, officially concluding his three-day State Visit to Papua New Guinea.

Prime Minister James Marape, who welcomed President Ramos-Horta on arrival with a military guard of honour, was also present to bid farewell to the Timor-Leste leader.

As Asia’s youngest nation, Timor-Leste’s growing relationship with Papua New Guinea signals the beginning of a new diplomatic chapter between the two countries.

The final handshake between Prime Minister Marape and President Ramos-Horta, moments before the aircraft departed shortly before 2pm, symbolised a shared commitment to stronger diplomatic cooperation between Port Moresby and Dili in the years ahead.
