Mothers at the Alotau Provincial Hospital maternity ward were treated to a special surprise over the weekend as the Alotau District administration delivered meals and baby gift packs to mark Mother’s Day.

Alotau MP Ricky Morris, accompanied by Alotau Town Mayor Esmond Basinauro and ward members, visited the hospital to spend time with women in both pre-natal and post-natal care.

Morris said while the district could not reach every mother, it was important to prioritize those at the forefront of bringing life.

"Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers for their important role in giving life to our future leaders and citizens," Morris said. "What better way to observe the day than here where it all begins. We wish them well and a safe delivery, and extend our well wishes to mothers throughout the country."

The delegation gifted food supplies to the hospital’s kitchen and distributed essential baby packs to expectant mothers and those who had recently given birth.

Mayor Basinauro said the initiative was also a gesture of appreciation for the hospital's staff.

"The hospital plays an important role for women, especially those who come to bear life, and we are pleased to support this initiative to appreciate the hospital at this time," he said.

Many of the recipients had traveled from distant island districts to ensure a supervised, safe delivery at the provincial capital.

Shanelle Hosea, a mother from Kurada village, expressed her gratitude for the unexpected support.

"I did not expect this to come, but God knows my needs," she said.

Obstetrics and Gynecology unit supervisor Sr. Rhonda Tiraka said the donation was significant for mothers coming from rural areas.

"Many of our mothers who come for delivery do not have these things with them, especially those coming in from faraway islands, so it is a blessing," Sr. Tiraka said.
