The township of Maprik in East Sepik Province has been placed under lockdown following a violent incident that saw five duplex houses at the New Town Police Barracks burned down overnight.

According to the East Sepik Provincial Command, the unrest erupted after the suspicious death of a young man from Serikum Village. In retaliation, nearby villagers stormed the police barracks, setting fire to the properties and causing extensive damage.

Provincial Police Commander Superintendent, Christopher Tamari confirmed the lockdown and issued a stern ultimatum.

“Police have given 24 hours for the surrender of those involved in the destruction and burning down of police properties,” he said.

Tamari expressed disappointment with the conduct of the villagers, calling for the immediate surrender of those responsible.

The lockdown is aimed at restoring order and preventing further escalation, as authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Investigations continue amid allegations that the deceased, Jude Nandi, died while under police custody. His body was discovered along the Amaku Riverbanks near Maprik Town, intensifying community anger and fueling the unrest.
