Dabaris face tough away test against Kandes in Madang
The Central Dabaris and Morobe Kandes are set for an explosive Round 2 clash in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup this weekend at Ron Albert Oval. Both sides enter the fixture with winning momentum after successful season openers.
The Dabaris currently sit atop the competition ladder following a dominant 32-18 victory over the Waghi Tumbe. Meanwhile, the Kandes occupy third place after a professional 26-16 debut win against the Rabaul Gurias at the Lae League Oval.
Dabaris Chief Executive Officer Hubert Warupi acknowledged the challenge of facing a Stanley Tepend-coached outfit in their first away match of the season.
"Kandes have started their inaugural season with a win over Agmark Gurias. This is obviously a statement," Warupi told NBC News. "Coach Stanley Tepend is one of the competition's successful coaches, and we know the Kandes will not be an easy team to play against."
Warupi said Dabaris expect a physical battle in the middle of the park and are wary of the Kandes' ability to exploit defensive lapses. However, he expressed confidence in the preparation led by head coach Solomon Kuluniasi.
"Coach Solo has prepared our team well and has been very diligent in making sure the team is disciplined and clinical," Warupi said. "The win over the Tumbes has lifted spirits in the camp, and we look forward to carrying that momentum."
The competition leaders are expected to field a largely unchanged lineup, with the coaching staff opting for consistency following their Round 1 performance.
Local supporters in Madang are encouraged to turn out in their red and blue colors to support the Central franchise as they look to maintain their position at the top of the table.
