Madang United and Agmark Morobe Wawens played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Laiwaden Oval recently, in a friendly match aimed at fostering sportsmanship and regional cooperation within the Momase region.

Madang Provincial Events Committee [MPEC] chairman and Madang United representative, Siegfried Beschel, praised the visiting Lae-based side for their commitment to the fixture.

“This is not just a friendly match, but a sign of unity between our two provinces in promoting soccer in the Momase region,” Beschel said.

Before the main kickoff, Beschel presented K1,000 to Wawens representative Bob Morris. The gesture was made on behalf of Madang Governor and club patron Ramsey Pariwa as a token of appreciation for the team’s travel and participation.

The Saturday afternoon's main event saw a competitive back-and-forth between the two senior squads. The Wawens claimed an early lead in the first half, but a resurgent Madang outfit struck twice after the break to take the lead. A late set-piece allowed the Wawens to find an equalizer, ending the contest in a 2-2 stalemate.

Earlier in the day, the Madang United development side secured a 2-1 victory over the Wawens’ development team.

Meanwhile, Morris expressed his gratitude to Governor Pariwa and the organizers as the matches served as a vital barometer for both clubs ahead of the Papua New Guinea Premier Soccer League [PSL] season.

“The purpose of this match is to see where we stand as teams, make improvements, and continue to promote unity and sportsmanship through football,” Morris said.

He also acknowledged the support of major sponsor Agmark in making the trip possible.
