Border Command officers challenged to strengthen leadership

27 Police officers from across the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary’s Border Command have been challenged to strengthen leadership and supervision within the force after completing a six-week Sergeant Course in Wewak.

East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Christopher Tamari urged the newly qualified police officers to take their leadership responsibilities seriously and help address needs in middle management.

“For me, my take about these six weeks of training is you all are leaders. Go out there and help us, the PPCs and PSCs, to manage the middle management, which has been the problematic area in this great organisation, the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary,” PPC Tamari said.

He said the sergeants are a critical link between senior management and rank-and-file officers.

“You are the supervisors; you are the bridge between the top management and our rank and file,” he said.

PPC Tamari said the Border Command was serious about reform and expected the newly trained officers to contribute to that change.

“For us in Border Command, we are serious about change and becoming the shining light to other commands or directorates,” he said.

He challenged the officers to use their experience to find solutions to challenges they encounter in their respective areas of duty.

“Despite the challenges on the ground and that are forthcoming, you as the leaders are the solution. You are all very experienced and I trust you all to do your best,” PPC Tamari said.

The officers received Certificates of Attainment after graduating from course one of 2026 at the Village Inn Conference Room in Wewak on Friday 7th of August.

The graduation was attended by East Sepik caretaker provincial administrator Alphonse Kami and acting deputy provincial administrator for social services Emmanuel Tomarum.

Kami congratulated the graduating officers and reaffirmed East Sepik provincial government’s commitment to supporting policing and maintaining law and order in the province.

He said the provincial administration would continue working with police to strengthen policing services across East Sepik.

Meanwhile, PPC Tamari also acknowledged the families of the graduating officers for supporting them throughout the six-week training period.
