Children Academy primary school marks 5th anniversary of Grand Chief Somare
Students at Children Academy Primary School in Lorengau gathered yesterday in a solemn assembly to mark the fifth anniversary of the passing of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
The event served as a heartfelt tribute to the man revered across the region as the founding father of Papua New Guinea.
In a moving display of respect, students and teachers participated in the ceremony by bringing floral offerings to honor the memory of the late statesman.
This collective gesture was intended to foster a sense of national pride and show appreciation for Sir Michael’s pivotal role in the country’s history.
During the assembly, School Board Chairman Mr. Atan Paliau addressed the student body to provide a detailed historical account of the Grand Chief’s life and legacy.
Paliau spoke extensively on the strategic actions Sir Michael took to establish the nation’s sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of students understanding the origins of their country and the tireless work of its first leader.
While addressing the assembly, Paliau took a moment to reflect on the peaceful nature of the nation’s transition to self-rule.
“Let me remind you all that our country gained its independence without bloodshed because of Sir Michael Thomas Somare and other great leaders of the country,” he told the students. “He will always be remembered as a champion, and we all must be grateful for what he has done for the people of Papua New Guinea.”
