New council members sworn in to bolster National Volunteer Service in PNG

Three new members were officially sworn into the National Volunteer Service [NVS] Council on Monday 16th February 2026 as the organization aims to strengthen volunteerism across Papua New Guinea.

The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by Magistrate Sandy Tiankin, formally inducted Chief Secretary to the Government Ivan Pomaleu, Department of Community Development & Religion secretary Jerry Ubase and Department of Defence secretary John Akipe.

The event was presided over by Chairman David Wissink, who formally addressed NVS executives and council members alike, highlighting the critical role of volunteer services in national development.

The National Volunteer Service operates under statutory mandate to mobilize citizens to contribute to nation building. The inclusion of high-ranking officials such as the Chief Secretary and the secretaries for Defense and Community Development, Youth & Religion signifies a strategic shift towards integrating volunteerism into the core of national and social welfare frameworks.

Historically, NVS has functioned as a bridge between government policy and grassroots implementation, particularly in remote areas where government services are limited.

Wissink reiterated on how NVS continues to grow, highlighting the significant increase in volunteer numbers the organization is set on engaging this year.

“We aim to engage 900 volunteers this year 2026 and the target is set to increase to 2900 come 2027. It is our duty as council members to work collaboratively to achieve these goals," he said.

The three council members pledged their support to the NVS council by each reciting their oaths to committing to uphold the principles of professional volunteerism and the welfare of volunteers in PNG with the hope of harnessing volunteer energy and ensure volunteers are supported and recognized for their contribution.

The National Volunteer Service is a state agency under the Ministry of Defense responsible for recruiting, training, and placing professional volunteers in remote communities.
