Lewas keep World Cup dream alive: sudden-death clash with USA looms
The PNG Lewas have clawed their way back into ICC T20 World Cup contention, securing a vital three-wicket victory over Namibia to set up a "do-or-die" showdown against the United States today.
Coming off the back of two bruising losses to Ireland and Bangladesh, the Lewas entered yesterday's fixture knowing anything less than a win would end their road to the World Cup.
The turnaround was sparked by a blistering performance from opener Hollan Doriga, who took the game away from Namibia early on. Doriga smashed 39 runs off just 25 balls, a Player of the Match performance that provided the aggression the Lewas had been missing in earlier rounds.
Doriga found a reliable partner in Konio Oala, who contributed a quick-fire 20 off 18 balls. Together, the opening pair laid the foundation for the successful chase, ensuring the middle order remained calm under pressure.
On the bowling front, the Lewas displayed clinical discipline with Sibona Jimmy spearheading the attack with two key wickets.
Hane Tau, Dika Lohia, and Isabel Toua each chipped in with one wicket to keep the Namibian scoring in check.
The victory acts as a lifeline, but the work is far from over. Head Coach Mahuru Dai was clear about the stakes for today’s final group stage match against the USA.
"Whoever wins tomorrow will advance to the Super Six," Dai said. "Our girls learned from the game against Namibia, and we will come back stronger. It determines whether we continue or bow out from the Qualifiers."
The Lewas have been on the road since the festive period, and Dai expressed his gratitude to Pacific-Aus Sports, Cricket Australia, and Cricket PNG for their continued support during this long-haul campaign.
With momentum now on their side, the Lewas face their biggest test yet. It’s a simple equation: win and advance, or lose and go home.
