Hela Governor Philip Undialu has appealed to his people to surrender their illegal factory-made guns to the authorities in a bid to curb gun violence and promote peace.

During the first Provincial Assembly Meeting on Tuesday in Tari, Governor Undialu announced a K5 million funding allocation for the gun surrender exercise, which will involve engaging gun owners in small and medium enterprise [SME] activities.

The gun surrender program is expected to run for two weeks in February, and the Hela Provincial Government is counting on the community's support to make it a success.

Rather than offering cash payouts, the Hela Provincial Government plans to provide resources and support to help individuals start new businesses, such as running public motor vehicles, building guesthouses, venturing into livestock farming or other SME activities.

"We want to engage you in meaningful activities," Governor Undialu said.

Governor Undialu emphasized that the goal is to provide a sustainable alternative to gun ownership.

The initiative comes as Police Minister John Pundari has warned that no cash will be exchanged for illegal guns during the upcoming national gun surrender program in February.

Governor Undialu echoed this sentiment, urging people to take advantage of the SME opportunities and surrender their guns voluntarily.

"We understand that you spent money to buy these guns, but that investment will be returned to you through SME activities.

"Holding onto these guns makes you an enemy of the state, and ultimately, they'll harm you or land you in prison." He said.

Governor Undialu emphasized that the Anti-Terrorism Act leaves no room for leniency, and it's time for people to cooperate and seize the opportunity to build a better future.
