Local community in Tari establishes company to drive development

A community Tari-Pori district of Hela has established the Hayapuga Construction Company in a bid to create jobs, support local institutions, and keep youths away from illegal activities.

Inspired by former United States President John F. Kennedy’s call to; "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country", local leaders say the new company in Hayapuga community, is about taking ownership of its own development through Small to Medium Enterprises [SME] participation.

Leading the initiative is Steven Talu Halimbu. He said the purpose of the company is to give locals direct opportunities in building and construction.

"The company is for the Halimbu community and for Hayapuga as a whole. We are starting small to ensure churches and schools are given assistance first. We cannot always expect the Government to do everything for us."

Halimbu and other like-minded leaders have previously supported churches, schools, and youth empowerment programs. The new company will expand that work by assisting with the construction and maintenance of church buildings, classrooms, and market facilities where people can sell their garden produce.

"We put God first in everything we do. This company is for the people. We start small and through the grace of God, we expect to expand," Mr. Halimbu said.

He also appealed for unity across the LLG.

"Everyone in Hayapuga must support the work of churches and schools. When we work together, development will follow."

Halimbu said many educated people from Hela have been living outside the province due to law and order problems. With peace slowly restoring in parts of Hayapuga, he is optimistic they will return.

"Many of our educated elites left because of lawlessness. Today there is peace. If they see that we are living peacefully and participating in meaningful activities, they will come back to be with us," he said.

Another local leader, Tobby Maya Pajape, is also driving change in the Karai area. He is leading the opening of bank accounts for women and youth groups to enable them to participate in SMEs.

"All we want is for the people to settle and meaningfully participate in local SMEs and live peaceful lives. I urge our youths to embrace development changes and take part in church and community activities,” he said.
